Wool warp, hand-dyed wool weft
63 by 94 inches, $7,000
This is my largest and most ambitious rug to date, 5 feet by 8 feet, necessitating the construction of a new, larger loom frame, 6 feet wide and only a few inches lower than our ceilings (see right). It is also the culmination of many years research into the prehistoric and historic weaving of the Southwest together with much experimentation on my part. The overall twill pattern in this rug is "loom controlled," a Navajo technique that yields a very thick dense textile. I have varied the effects of the patterning, creating the flowing, organic shapes, by changing both the weft colors and the background patterns as I wove.
