AUTUMN ALIGHTS IN THE HILLS ABOVE THE RUSSIAN RIVER IN MENDOCINO COUNTY
Wool warp and hand-dyed wool weft
36 by 64 inches, $1,950
In Mendocino County, the ranges intersect of all the species of oaks that grow in California (excepting one limited to the San Diego County area). In oak forests here, all these species mix, and in the fall of the year the leaves of the many deciduous oaks, according to their various species, turn colors ranging from deepest purple-red through crimson, scarlet, orange, gold and yellow. Against the dark greens of redwoods and douglas fir, the softer greens of live oaks and the intense blue of the autumn sky, these bright colors seem more a phenomenon of light than of solid matter. A particular hillside above the Russian River along Highway 101 just north of Cloverdale, viewed in October, inspired this rug.
