THE FIRE AT THE HEART OF WINTER
Wool warp and weft
38 by 53 inches, $1,700
For a series of rugs evoking the seasons, winter came first, being for me in Northern California the season when the rains come, with new growth and new beginnings. I envisioned this rug in red, black and white, colors that form a sort of triangulation of opposites--and yet not, for red and black are often interchangeable, having similar value in the range from light to dark.
I found inspiration for the design in the magnificent Navajo “chief’s blankets.” When my sketches of various alternatives also revealed an echo of the hexagrams of the I Ching, I was pleased to find this connection to yet another arena of pattern that fasincates me.
