VERY RICH HOURS OF SUMMER Wool warp, hand-dyed wool weft 38 by 65 inches In a series for the seasons, the designs for winter, spring and autumn came to me easily, building up seemingly of themselves from layers of patterns of striped elements. The colors I should use also quickly became clear to me. Summer was a different matter. I wished to evoke the soft air, warmth and bright sunshine of early summer, a time of blossoming and flourishing, of luxurious ease. Several designs with yellows proved unsatisfying. Stripes seemed too rigid. The final design of small, bright elements floating in green finally struck me as embodying the carefee, lazy hours of childhood summers. BACK HOME |
